Indonesia is actively seeking assurances from the United States regarding the continuation of previously agreed-upon tariff exemptions for critical exports following the implementation of a new 10% U.S. tariff. This tariff, introduced due to concerns about forced labor enforcement, includes Indonesia among the nations subjected to the lower levy. Indonesian authorities have expressed their intent to maintain close communication with U.S. trade officials, hoping that existing agreements will still allow duty-free access for major exports like crude palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and natural rubber.
In addition to navigating the new tariff landscape, Indonesia is also anticipating the results of a separate U.S. investigation into structural excess capacity. This investigation could potentially lead to further trade restrictions. Indonesian government representatives have emphasized their commitment to ongoing negotiations aimed at securing favorable tariff rates and safeguarding the country’s export interests.
The revised U.S. trade policy does afford some benefits, notably providing preferential treatment for certain Indonesian textile exports that incorporate U.S. cotton and other American materials. These measures reflect the interconnected nature of the textile industries in both countries, allowing Indonesia to benefit from incorporating U.S. inputs into its products.
With these new trade dynamics at play, Indonesia reported that its bilateral trade with the United States reached a substantial $18.4 billion during the first five months of 2026, resulting in a notable trade surplus of approximately $7 billion. The figures underscore the significant economic relationship between the two nations, highlighting the importance of maintaining stable and mutually beneficial trade agreements.
