In a move set to bolster economic ties, the United States will soon implement retroactive tariff relief for a range of non-semiconductor products from Taiwan. This development comes after two months of intensive negotiations between the two nations, conducted under a bilateral investment memorandum of understanding, and is scheduled to begin on May 1, according to Taiwan’s Executive Yuan.

The planned tariff adjustments will see a cap of 15 percent imposed on items such as auto parts, logs, lumber, and various wood-derived products. Additionally, some derivative products made from steel, aluminum, and copper that are utilized in aircraft components will be exempt from Section 232 tariffs. Taiwanese government officials believe that these exemptions will significantly enhance the global competitiveness of their industries and facilitate greater access to the US market.

Earlier this year, the two countries formalized an agreement incorporating three principal tariff arrangements. These include a reciprocal tariff rate of 15 percent for Taiwan, which will not incur additional most-favored nation charges, special treatment for products related to semiconductors, and particular concessions for non-semiconductor goods currently subject to Section 232 tariffs.

It is noteworthy that the US has not applied Section 232 tariffs to semiconductor exports from Taiwan or related products. Nevertheless, Taiwanese authorities are actively engaged in discussions with the US Department of Commerce to expedite the implementation of these new tariff concessions for sectors excluding semiconductors.

The Taiwanese government views this tariff relief as a strategic move to strengthen its industrial sectors’ international standing and expand their reach in the lucrative US market, marking a significant step forward in bilateral trade relations.
