This decision follows reports that the United States declined to accommodate the Iranian squad during the tournament. Despite Iran’s matches still being scheduled in the U.S., Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that FIFA had reached out to Mexico with the hosting request after U.S. authorities reportedly refused to provide overnight accommodations.
The Iranian team will now establish their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, which is conveniently located near the U.S. border and close to San Diego, California. FIFA has confirmed this relocation as part of their official release of team base camp locations for the World Cup. Initially, Iran had intended to set up their World Cup headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. However, escalating tensions in the Middle East and complications related to U.S. sanctions on Iran have led to a change in those plans.
President Sheinbaum expressed Mexico’s readiness to welcome the Iranian team, stating that the country had no reservations about accommodating them. She mentioned that Mexico is actively working with FIFA to iron out the logistical details required for the team’s stay. The decision to move the team to Tijuana is seen as a practical solution to avoid potential visa complications that could arise if they were based in the United States.
Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, commented on the relocation, highlighting that the proximity of Tijuana to the U.S. border would ease travel logistics for the team. He also noted the availability of direct flights from Iran to Mexico via Iran Air, which simplifies their travel arrangements significantly. While the U.S. State Department has affirmed Iran’s participation in the World Cup, it has remained silent on the reasons behind not allowing the team to stay within the U.S. during the event.
The FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to take place from June 11 to July 19.
